4 Elements, 28″ x 28″
In 2007, a group of quilters organized a connection to the Fabric of Life organization. During a CQA meeting, we had the opportunity to buy hand-dyed fabric from Mali/Africa. This quilt is my contribution for the fundraiser auction for Fabric of Life, soon to be held (more info on this a.s.a.p.).
The title reflects how I see fire, water, earth and air, – the 4 elements-, interacting. I strongly believe, life needs a bit of every one to keep a balanced sum of all.

25″ x 25″ - finished block: 2 1/2 inches. A quarter of the size of Earth, Wind and Fire.
The top of this year’s challenge quilt is pieced. All scraps in hand-dyes or batiks.
Now, it’s all about the quilting. Again: Ship? What ship? Wat I wasn’t expecting, I truly enjoy to play with the word or motive, coming from this piece of ugly and old fabric I had to use.
I decided to use the motive again, very subtil, sure not in a matter of the visible print.

Deadlines, deadlines, they sneak up so fast, tomorrow is another one: at CQA, – for a Small Quilts show in April at Up Front in Issaquah. Well, I’ll see if this quilt is going to make the move, it still has to run thru the jury process.
I love the layers and circles, which look just as I imagine molecules of fragrances. It reminds me of how the sense of smell can bring back experiences from long ago in an instant

It’s done! Finished!

Looking for hours at the diverse greenery, and over and over again thru hundreds of my traveling daughters pictures, the title Nature’s Lace just fits. It is a small glimpse into the world of tropical rainforests, – this one is north of Cairns/Australia, where this kind of palmtree is native to. What’s missing on the image, the sounds of the rainforest.
Living Colour will have it’s debut at the APNQ Quiltfest in August 2008.

Eureka! All cutting and piecing is done.
Looks cool.

I’m adding some shading by fabric felt-pen to give it a more 3-dimensional look. Painting on fabric.
Now comes the quilting, lots of it. I love this part, to give the piece even more dimension, structure and depth.

Finally, I found the guts to cut into this yummy hand dyed green yard from Judy Robertson. And also the guts to stick it to another gorgeous piece of hand dyes from Frieda Anderson or Laura Wasilowski. That makes about 50 bucks just in fabric. No wonder, my thoughts still are: don’t mess it up!

Just checked the new Hoffman Challenge , I’m not sure whether I like this fabric. As usual, lots of pink! I don’t like pink, that alone makes it into a challenge for me. Maybe there is something more I can do about the blues. For sure, I’ve to see the fabric in real, and I’m almost certain, there will be a gold-overprint in Hoffman -style.
So, what can this be? The bird wants to demand a rather “Asian” theme, should I give in or just chop it up into such small pieces, there is no theme at all. And the blue will be my major color anyway. Maybe a garnment would be a good place to show off this fabric…
